Chapter 15

The western wall of Sumbarrah Bey’s castle rose more than one hundred feet above the rocky shoreline, curving in one of the long sides of the complex’s oval shape. Winds from the west struck the wall and swept upward, creating updrafts for gulls to ride as they searched for food in the foamy tide below. As the breezes ruffled his thick hair, the castle’s owner stood on the highest parapet and stared out at the endless ocean. At his feet knelt a scribe with a wax tablet, whose sole responsibility was writing down and transcribing his master’s poetry.

“There you are!” Jumbarrah said as he finished climbing the stairs which led to the parapet. Two guards parted to let him pass.

As he approached, Sumbarrah turned, spread his arms in welcome, and gave his brother a big smile. “Here I am!”

Jumbarrah stopped. “Should I worry that you’re in such a good mood?”

“Ha! I feel this will be a day we never forget, my brother. Is our guest ready?”

“He’s got a mouth on him, that one does.”

“Does he now? Excellent! It’s always more fun when they talk back. They tend to scream louder.”

Close by on the parapet, a wooden scaffold surrounded a square hole in the stonework. Inside of the framing hung a metal cage with a door on one side and bars on the other three, suspended over the void by a multi-corded rope bigger around than an average man’s forearm. The rope then wound up a crank-turned pulley, attended by two heavily muscled slaves clad in nothing but loincloths. Bey stepped inside the cage and closed the door. As the slaves began cranking the wheel, the cage lowered.

“I’ll meet you at the bottom,” he said to Jumbarrah.
